To check visa status UAE, you use one of two free official portals, and which one depends on where your visa was issued. Dubai-issued visas are checked through GDRFA Dubai, while visas from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain are checked through ICP Smart Services. Your passport number is enough for the basic check; no account or Emirates ID is needed. Rules and portal steps verified September 2026.
The core rule: two portals that do not talk to each other
The UAE runs two parallel immigration systems. ICP, the federal authority, holds the files for six emirates. GDRFA, Dubai’s own residency directorate, holds Dubai files, and the two databases do not share records. Check a Dubai visa on ICP and you get “no record found” even if everything about your visa is fine. The reverse is equally true.
This is the single fact that resolves most failed checks. Before anything else, confirm which emirate issued your visa. It is printed on the residence visa itself, and for employees it follows the emirate where the employer or free zone is registered, not where you live.

How to check on ICP Smart Services (all emirates except Dubai)
The ICP check is public and free, with no login required.
- Open smartservices.icp.gov.ae and find the File Validity service in the public services section
- Choose passport information as your search type
- Enter your passport number, nationality and the requested details exactly as they appear in your passport
- Submit to see your visa type, file number, issue date and expiry date
The same check works in the UAEICP mobile app. If you prefer searching by travel document instead, we cover that route in a separate step-by-step passport number check.
How to check a Dubai visa on GDRFA
For Dubai-issued visas, run the residency status query on the GDRFA Dubai website or the DubaiNow app. You will need your passport details or your file number. Results show validity and expiry for residence visas and entry permits issued in Dubai.
If your application is still in process rather than issued, GDRFA tracking works differently and uses your application number. Our guide on tracking a GDRFA application explains what each in-process status means and how long each stage normally sits.
Where checks go wrong
The first question we ask any client who reports “no record found” is which emirate issued the visa, and in most cases that ends the mystery: they were on the wrong portal. The second most common cause we see is a passport mismatch. Clients who renewed their passport after the visa was issued search with the new number while the file still carries the old one, and the system correctly returns nothing.
Two more to avoid. Do not use third-party “visa check” websites that ask for payment or extra personal details; the official checks are free. And if you are mid-application for a golden visa, check application status rather than visa validity, since a visa that has not been issued yet has no validity record to find. The application process guide shows where status checks fit in that sequence.
FAQ
Can I check my UAE visa status with just my passport number?
Yes. Both ICP and GDRFA accept a passport-based search for issued visas, and no account, Emirates ID or application number is needed for the basic validity check. You will need your nationality and passport details entered exactly as printed, since a single mismatched field returns no result.
Is there a fee to check visa status in the UAE?
No. The official checks on ICP Smart Services and GDRFA Dubai are free. Any site charging money for a “visa status report” is a middleman at best. Fees only enter the picture when you act on the result, for example renewing or amending the visa.
How do I know if my visa is cancelled?
Run the same file validity check. A cancelled visa shows a cancelled or expired status rather than disappearing from the system. If you believe your visa is active but the portal shows cancelled, contact your sponsor or employer first, since cancellation is filed from their side, then confirm with ICP or GDRFA directly.
Which portal covers free zone visas?
The emirate where the free zone sits. A JAFZA or DMCC visa is a Dubai file, so GDRFA. A Sharjah or Ajman free zone visa sits with ICP. The free zone processes your paperwork, but the immigration record lives with the emirate’s authority.
Get a status read before your next step
If a check returned something unexpected, cancelled when it should be active, no record where there should be one, or an expiry sooner than you planned for, send us a screenshot of the result plus your issuing emirate on WhatsApp and we will tell you what it means and what to file next. No charge for the read.
This is general guidance, not legal advice; final decisions on any visa rest with ICP and GDRFA.
