You need three things: your passport number, your nationality, and either your date of birth or your passport expiry date, depending on the option you pick. If the visa or entry permit was issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, run the check on ICP. If it was issued in Dubai, the record sits with GDRFA Dubai instead. Both checks are free and neither requires an account. Portals checked in August 2026.
Running the check on the ICP file validity service
Open the ICP file validity service. The form asks you to make two choices before it accepts any details, and both matter:
- Choose how you want to search: by passport information, or by file number if you have one
- Choose what you are checking: pick the visa or entry permit option for a visit visa, and the residency option for a residence file
- Enter your passport number exactly as printed, including any leading zeros
- Select your nationality from the list and enter the date the form asks for
- Complete the captcha and submit
Picking the wrong record type is the reason a lot of valid visit visas come back empty. A visit visa searched under the residency option will not appear, because the two sit in different parts of the file. Try the other option before you assume something is wrong.
If the visa was issued in Dubai
Dubai runs its own residency authority, and the federal system does not hold its files. A Dubai visit visa checked on ICP returns nothing, no matter how carefully you type. The GDRFA status page is organised around application, file and establishment numbers rather than passports, though one of its search options does accept passport details with nationality and year of birth.
If you only have a passport in hand and the visa is Dubai-issued, the faster route is to ask whoever submitted it for the application and transaction numbers, both printed on the payment receipt. Our guide to the GDRFA application status check sets out which search option needs which numbers.
What the result tells you, and what it does not
The portal returns the file type, its current validity, and the expiry date on record. That is the authority’s own record, so it settles arguments with a sponsor, an employer or an airline check-in desk.
It does not tell you your last legal day in the country. Grace periods sit on top of the expiry date and differ by permit type, so an entry permit that expired yesterday is not automatically an overstay today. It also will not show you why an application was refused or what document is missing. For a request still in progress rather than a visa already issued, you need the application tracker, not the validity check.
Overstay fines accrue daily once any grace period ends. Confirm the current daily amount directly with ICP or GDRFA rather than trusting figures quoted on third-party sites, because they change.
Why the search comes back with nothing
- The wrong portal for the issuing emirate, which is by far the most common cause
- The wrong record type selected, usually residency chosen for a visit visa
- A passport renewed since the visa was issued, so the file still carries the old number
- A dropped leading zero, or a passport number typed with the letter O instead of a zero
- A file that has genuinely not been created yet, because the application is still in progress
What golden visa applicants on a visit visa need to watch
This is where the check stops being administrative and starts costing money. Investors who enter on a visit visa and apply for a golden visa from inside the country often assume the pending application protects them. It does not. The visit visa runs its own clock, and the status change cannot be completed while overstay days are sitting on the file.
Check the visit visa expiry the day you submit the golden visa application, not the week it is expected back. If the two dates are close, the options are an extension or an exit and re-entry, and both need arranging before the permit lapses rather than after. Q 1. Can anyone check my visa status with just my passport number?
In practice, someone with your passport number, nationality and date of birth can run the check, which is why employers use it to verify new hires. Treat those three details as sensitive. Only enter them on the official ICP or GDRFA sites, never on a lookalike page that asks for a fee.
Q 2. Is there a charge for the visa status check?
No. Both the ICP and GDRFA inquiries are free public tools with no login required. Any site charging for a status check is reselling something the government gives away, and several of them harvest passport details while they do it.
Q 3. My visa is valid but the portal says no record found. What now?
Work through the causes in order: right portal for the issuing emirate, right record type, exact passport number. If your passport was renewed after the visa was issued, the file needs updating through the authority before the search will match, and that is a separate transaction.
Q 4. Does this work from outside the UAE?
Yes, both portals are reachable internationally, though the ICP service can be slow or blocked on some networks abroad. If the page will not load, try a different network or the UAEICP app rather than assuming the file is the problem.
